Why Are Your AC Lines Freezing Up?

The first step to diagnosing any issue with your heating and air conditioning system is understanding why the problem is occurring in the first place. With that being said, let’s consider some of the reasons why your AC lines may be freezing up. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and we recommend that you consult an HVAC professional to diagnose the issue with your system.)

1. You have clogged air filters.

Did you know that your air filters should be changed at least every 90 days? In fact, if you have indoor pets or allergies, you should be changing your air filters as often as every 45 days. When you don’t change your air filters regularly, they can become clogged. This can greatly reduce the flow of air through your air conditioner and cause the AC lines to freeze.

2. Your evaporator coils are dirty.

Much like clogged air filters, dirty evaporator coils can also greatly hinder the airflow through your air conditioner. If you schedule regular AC tune-ups, you can prevent your evaporator coils from getting too dirty, as your HVAC technician will clean them as a part of the tune-up. 

3. Your blower fan is malfunctioning. 

Something else to consider is that your blower fan may not be functioning properly. When your blower fan malfunctions, it cannot send air to the evaporator coil. Not only can this prevent the removal of the warm air from your home, but it can prevent the cool air from entering your home as well. 

4. Your drain pipe is clogged.

Much like a malfunctioning blower, a clogged drain pipe can also lead to freezing around your evaporator coils. The drain pipe allows the excess fluid to leave your air conditioning system. But when these pipes are clogged, the remaining condensation can freeze around your evaporator coils, thereby preventing your system from operating as it should. 

5. Your system is low on refrigerant.

Strange as it may sound, another reason your AC lines could freeze up is that your system is low on refrigerant. With lower refrigerant levels, your air conditioner may dip below freezing to compensate for the lacking refrigerant. This can cause the moisture to freeze around your evaporator coils. 

How to Stop Your AC Lines from Freezing Up

We hope that you now have a better idea as to why your AC lines may be freezing up. With this in mind, the next step is to figure out what to do next to resolve the issue of your refrigerant lines freezing. Here are a few steps you can take to get started.

1. Replace your air filters. 

If it’s been a while since you replaced your air filters, swapping out your existing air filters with new ones is a good place to start. 

2. Ensure your return registers are open.

Much like clogged air filters, closed supply registers can prevent your air conditioner from having adequate airflow. As such, consider wiping out the grills of your return registers with a cloth. 

3. Ensure your supply registers are open as well.

Along with your supply registers, you’ll also want to be sure that the return registers are also open. Before trying to run your system, open all your supply registers, even for more infrequently used rooms. Then, try running your system!

4. Contact an HVAC professional.

Did you try going through Steps 1 through 3 to no avail? It may be time to bring in an HVAC professional to diagnose the issue. If you are experiencing a refrigerant leak, for instance, an HVAC technician will need to identify where the leak is coming from and determine if it can be repaired. In some cases, a full HVAC system replacement is required.
