As we begin to make our way out of the summer, the weather begins to cool down. That means you’ll be running your air conditioning less and may start turning on the heat. In this way, a key aspect of getting ready for the fall is ensuring that your HVAC system is ready for it.

To help you start preparing for the season of cooler nights, here are just 5 tips for getting your HVAC system ready for fall.

1. Try running your heating system.

Over the summer, you most likely only ran your air conditioner. As such, while you’ve been enjoying your summer vacation, your heating system has been on vacation as well. That means your heating system is a bit out of practice in doing its job of keeping your house warm.

To see how your system is doing, try running it. In many cases, we neglect to turn on our heating system until we really need it. So, if it doesn’t turn on, we may find ourselves chilly and unable to warm up. Rather, try turning it on, and if your system fails to turn on, you can contact an HVAC professional to determine what the issue might be.

2. Replace your air filters.

Once you’ve tried running your heating system, the next thing you can do to prepare it for fall is replace your air filters. Your air filters allow your system to collect dirt and debris in order to keep the air in your home clean. To keep the air in your home clean, and your HVAC system running properly, you should swap out your air filters regularly.

Generally speaking, you should replace your air filters every 90 days. If you have any pets or allergies, you may want to swap out your air filters as often as every 45 days. To learn more about when to change out your air filters, check out our post: How Often Should Air Filters Be Changed?

3. Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat.

With brand new air filters installed, another way you can get your HVAC system ready for the fall is by upgrading to a smart thermostat. While a standard thermostat will do its job, a smart thermostat will not only help your HVAC system to run more efficiently but offer an additional surplus of benefits.

Beyond efficiency, smart thermostats are easy to use and can help you to save money through increased energy efficiency, as well as rebates. If upgrading to a smart thermostat sounds appealing, there are a wide variety of smart thermostats to choose from. From Ecobee to Honeywell, find the one that is right for you and your family to receive the most benefits.

4. Schedule a heating system tune-up.

So maybe you upgraded your smart thermostat or even swapped out your air filters. With that said, as you tried turning on your heating system for the first time in a while, you may have noticed some issues with your system. Maybe it’s short cycling, or it’s not heating up to the temperature you set your system to—these are signs that it’s a good time to get a tune-up.

When you schedule an HVAC system tune-up, an HVAC technician will take a look at your system and ensure that it’s ready to handle the cooler weather. For example, as the HVAC technician inspects your system, they will determine if any repairs are needed to keep your heating system running as it should.

5. Consider upgrading your HVAC system.

Maybe you’ve scheduled an HVAC system tune-up, and perhaps your HVAC technician told you that your heating system is in need of some substantial repairs. Especially if your system is 10 to 15 years old, that may mean it’s time to consider upgrading your system, instead of repairing it.

Not only will a brand new system provide you with the home comfort you deserve, but it will offer greater efficiency. According to the EPA, heating accounted for 42% of the average American household’s energy usage. With almost half of your energy usage going to heating, it’s important to have a system that’s efficient, so consider upgrading!
